HENDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. — Investigators arrested a West Tennessee man accused of aiming a rifle at a Henderson County sheriff‘s deputy. Investigators said the gun jammed during the incident. “I think he’s crazy,” Robert Boyte, a neighbor, said. Investigators said the incident happened Monday night at some apartments on Blue Goose Road after they received a complaint of a highly intoxicated man shooting a gun. “There’s just never anything going on, so this is a shocker,” Boyte said. Robert Matthew Compton faces multiple counts including aggravated assault, reckless endangerment, drunkenness and firearm charges. Eyewitnesses told investigators Compton fired multiple rounds, according to an incident report. “The officer unholstered his weapon, ordered the guy to put the gun down,” Henderson County Sheriff Brian Duke said. Duke said at some point Compton turned the gun on himself, but the weapon did not fire. According to an incident report, Compton fell to the ground, giving the deputy an opportunity to grab the gun. According to the incident report, the deputy said when he cleared the assault rifle he noticed two rounds jammed inside the chamber. “Had he made the decision, that split-second decision to fire, he would have been justified,” Duke said. Investigators said the deputy also found a loaded pistol in Compton‘s pocket. Boyte said he believes it is an isolated incident. “Nice and quiet normally except for last night,” Boyte said. According to the incident report, Compton had what appeared to be a seizure and was treated at a local hospital before going to jail. No one was hurt during the incident. Compton is being held in lieu of a $50,000 bond. He is due back in court Feb. 3.
