McNAIRY COUNTY, Tenn. — Buying or selling items on websites like Craigslist or Barter Junkie can land some good deals, but a recent crime has brought attention to potential danger. During an incident out of Georgia, a couple was robbed and killed trying to buy a vehicle from Craigslist. In response, the McNairy County Sheriff’s Office wants to keep that from happening in West Tennessee. “There’s always been a criminal element that followed it around, especially on the vehicle side. it seems like for some reason or another, people who show up to buy a vehicle usually show up with money in hand,” Sheriff Guy Buck said. That is why the sheriff’s office is now offering the parking lot at the McNairy County Justice Center as a meeting point for online shoppers and sellers. A 24-hour surveillance camera system surrounds the parking lot at the justice center, which is just one extra element in the lot the sheriff said should make every transaction feel a little safer. “Hopefully offering our location might make somebody who is intending to scam somebody for money or something, they’ll be a little more weary about coming here,” Sheriff Buck explained. Sheriff Buck said if the post sounds too good to be true, it probably is. He also said to use extreme caution when meeting people you have not met before.
