DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man was in a Jackson courtroom Thursday on charges of stealing and then lying to police about his age. According to the affidavit, Equavious Dijanye Barbee, 18, was thought to have hidden merchandise while in the fitting room at Kohl’s on Vann Drive. Police responded and found Barbee to be wearing a pair of Levi’s jeans and an Adidas jacket underneath his own clothes, the document states. The hidden clothing was valued at more than $100. Barbee then allegedly told police his birthday was in April of 1997 and that he was not yet an adult, according to the affidavit. Barbee did not have any identification at the time. Barbee then was taken to the Madison County Juvenile Detention Facility and later released without bail in accordance with juvenile arrest policy, the document states. According to the affidavit, Barbee’s actual birthday is in April of 1996, making him an adult. Barbee is charged with theft of property under $500 and false reports, according to court documents. His bond was set at $10,000.
