Airport authority board discusses air service for Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — Officials at McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport believe they are closer to knowing which carrier will serve Madison County. Airport leaders met Monday night to discuss what would be done if Seaport Airlines were to leave for good and another airline were to take over. The executive director said the goal is bring in a new airline that will offer flights to Saint Louis, Mo. However, they cannot move forward until the U.S. Department of Transportation approves the plan. “I think if we really know what was going on behind the scene we would know because the new airline will have to hire people,” said Steve Smith, executive director with the Jackson-Madison County Airport Authority. “They will have to buy an airplane. They will have some things they have to do.” Officials at the airport said they are in constant communication with the U.S. Department of Transportation and expect to have an answer within the next couple weeks.
