Southern storm hits nation’s capital en route to East Coast

WASHINGTON (AP) – The storm that dealt much of the South its first major winter blast is taking aim at the nation’s capital and surrounding Mid-Atlantic states.

The storm raked several Southern states Monday, when many schools and business were closed for Presidents Day. By Tuesday, it was moving from the Carolinas and Virginia into the Washington, D.C., area, prompting the federal government to close Washington-area offices to most workers.

The federal government’s closure was expected to keep tens of thousands of commuters off the roads and rails Tuesday. A winter storm warning remained for the Washington area until noon Tuesday with the National Weather Service predicting 6 to 8 inches of snow.

Meanwhile, states around the South were dealing with cleaning up.
