JACKSON, Tenn. — Winter weather in West Tennessee has created not only mounds of ice but mountains of trash pouring out of dumpsters and trash cans. Stevo’s Hot Wings shut down Friday evening with another round of winter precipitation on the way. “It’s rough, because being a small business, you can’t afford to be shut down a long time,” owner Steven Graves said. As business is nearly a bust, it doesn’t stop the piles of trash from pouring out of waste bins. “Trash is just piling up, and most of the time, just like on my street, if something falls out of the can they don’t even pick it up,” Graves said. Waste management companies have halted all pickup for safety reasons, and for some it’s been nearly two weeks since the crews have paid them a visit. Homeowners said two weeks worth of trash will be a lot of work for the city to make up. “I see some of the dumpsters around the city overflowing, so I can’t even take my trash to some of the larger ones around the city,” Mario Marshall said. While crews have some serious work ahead, Graves said the ice couldn’t melt away soon enough. “Bills still have to be paid. It’s just rough on everybody,” Graves said. Waste management crews haven’t said when the pickup will resume.
