BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — A man is in Haywood County Jail Tuesday after nearly running over a state trooper during a traffic stop for speeding, according to officials. According to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesman Josh DeVine, the traffic stop happened around 8:30 Monday night off Highway 76. A Tennessee Highway Patrolman pulled over 38-year-old Shawn Montel Brown for speeding. “It appeared the driver of the vehicle attempted to run over the trooper with his vehicle after which the trooper fired several shots,” DeVine said. One of those shots did hit Brown, but DeVine said he does not know where specifically he was injured. The suspect was still able to drive and later was caught by troopers in Fayette County. He was briefly hospitalized at Regional One in Memphis and currently is being held in Haywood County Jail on charges of evading arrest and aggravated assault. Morgan Hendrix, 15, lives right across the street from the initial traffic stop and said she heard the gunfire. Her family feels safer knowing the suspect is behind bars. “We’re freaked out a little, but it passed on cause we heard that they caught him,” Hendrix said.
