ALAMO, Tenn.– One person is dead following a Thursday morning house fire in Alamo. The fire sparked around 9:30 a.m. in the midst of a winter storm inside the home at 614 Park Street. “We went around and tried to yell for her and we tried to get in, but the house was already engulfed in smoke,” neighbor Jake Nichols said. The only person inside was killed, according to Alamo Fire Chief Timmy Williams. Neighbors say she was an 83-year-old woman. Fire officials have not released the name of the victim or what caused the fire. “Any time you have a fire it can be chaotic, and these conditions just added to the stress level today,” Williams said. Fire officials said the wintry conditions made fighting the blaze difficult, with water from the hoses sometimes freezing. “When we arrived, there was a lot of smoke coming from the house and the wind was just making it worse,” Williams said. Neighbors said they knocked out the woman’s windows trying to alert her. They describe the woman as a nice person who usually stayed home and say this is a sad loss for the community. “Our only hope and prayer is that maybe she heard us from the outside, that she knew somebody on the outside cared for her deeply and tried to help but just couldn’t,” Nichols said. A state fire marshal has been called to help investigate.
