JACKSON, Tenn. — Troopers out of the Tennessee Highway Patrol office in Jackson responded to dozens of wrecks Wednesday night. The sleet was coming down hard and sticking to the roads, making it slick for drivers. Lt. Brad Wilbanks with the THP said as of 10 p.m. they had responded to 60 wrecks in the district. Jackson city workers treated the roads with sand and salt Wednesday night before the sleet froze on the ground. Drivers who had to venture out early in the evening said it wasn’t as bad as they anticipated. Thomas McKee said, “far as I’m concerned, it ain’t that bad just yet, but it’s going to get bad.” McKee was heading into work and said he’s lucky he didn’t have to go too far. “Roads are not really that bad if you take your time and you know, go on, but you can’t go fast or you’ll be off the road,” he said. Other drivers agreed. “The roads are passable, a little ice on there but they’re OK,” Jessie James said. James said fortunately he’s been lucky on the roads. “I haven’t had any trouble,” James said. “I’m getting around without any trouble.” “Of course later on tonight that may be different,” he added. As of Wednesday night, city street department crews had put down 250 pounds of salt.
