WEAKLEY COUNTY, Tenn. — A teenager was killed in a Monday morning wreck in Sharon after he hit a patch of ice while driving to school, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Troopers say Bobby Goodman, 16, of Sidonia, was killed in a single-vehicle accident when the pickup truck he was driving left the roadway and overturned. The accident happened around 6:50 a.m., Monday on Lower Sharon Road south of Dresden, according to Trooper Andy Forsythe with the THP. Goodman is believed to have hit a patch of ice when the Chevy pickup he was driving left the roadway, hit a culvert, overturned and caught fire, according to Forsythe. “(He) hit a patch of ice on the road and sent the vehicle spinning out of control,” Forsythe said. At this time, troopers believe Goodman likely died on impact. The Weakley County Sheriff’s Department contacted Assistant Director of Weakley County Schools Jeff Kelley shortly before the school day started to notify him of the wreck, according to a release from the school system. While not identifying the student, the release states he was a sophomore at Dresden High School. “We were shocked and saddened to learn of this morning’s tragic accident,” Director of Schools Randy Frazier said in the release. “We will keep this young man and his family in our thoughts and prayers.” Principal Chuck West is working to provide counseling services for students and staff, according to the release. “On behalf of the students and staff of Dresden High School we extend our sincerest sympathy to this family,” West said the in release. Counselors were brought to Dresden High School after hearing of the accident to help staff and students. “We assist in helping teachers and students process and cope with the events,” Lorna Benson said. Benson is the coordinator at Weakley County Safe Schools and said they will be at the school to help support those however they can. Parents picking their kids up from school Monday afternoon said this hits close to home as it could have been anyone’s child. “It’s heartbreaking really you hurt for the parents of the child that it happened to, but if affects all these kids here,” Teresa Rachels said. Forsythe said this is considered a weather related accident because of the ice on the road. “We just want to continue to urge all motorists to drive with caution and be aware that some secondary roads still have ice and snow on them especially the ones that don’t receive a lot of sunshine during the day.”
