Retired Jackson policeman faces domestic assault charge

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A retired Jackson police officer was charged Wednesday with domestic assault stemming from an alleged Monday night incident. Police responded Tuesday to a home on McCool Drive to investigate a disturbance involving William Bancroft Jr., who was highly intoxicated, according to an affidavit. A woman told officers Bancroft had assaulted her around 8 p.m. the night before by grabbing her arms and squeezing hard, refusing to let go despite her crying and asking him to let go, the document states. Police say the woman did not have visible injuries. A witness told police he saw Bancroft squeezing the woman’s arms and heard her crying. Bancroft is charged with one count of simple domestic assault. His is free on a $1,000 bond. Bancroft served as a Jackson police officer and is retired, according to the department. According to the city’s personnel department, he retired in September 2007 and served about 24 years with the department.
