JACKSON, Tenn. — Crews spent Thursday working to get four derailed train cars back on track. Two of the cars flipped on their side, dumping hundreds of thousands of pounds of corn into a Jackson city street. “It’s a mess,” Nancy Weems said. “I can’t believe it.” Weems said she brought her daughter to watch crews works. The duo were not the only ones stopping by the clean-up site. “I heard about this wreck on the corn, and I came down here to see about picking some up,” Luther Martin said. Dozens of residents from across the county were hoping to get their hands on some of the spilled corn. “I’m going to go home with tears in my eye cause there ain’t going to be nothing left,” James Neely said as he watched the pump vacuuming up the kernels. Two cranes worked simultaneously to pull and lift the cars. As of Thursday evening, two cars remain on their sides. Officials with the city said they had hoped to have the cars running again by the end of the night. WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News spoke by phone with West Tennessee Railroad. However, they could not release any new information. Officials estimate about 15 feet or more of track also are going to need repairs.
