JACKSON, Tenn. — Runners were off and racing through the rolling hills in the 43rd annual Andrew Jackson Marathon held Saturday morning at Union University. “It’s been an amazing day,” said Julie McMahon, director of the marathon. “We have had over 600 people show up in the rain. No one is complaining, and we are all having a great time.” The marathon features all types of running formats — the full marathon of 26.2 miles, a half marathon of 13.1 miles and a 5K of 3.1 miles. “It’s just an awesome feeling whenever you hit that wall. Mine was mile nine for me today,” Autumn Gonzalez said. “You just push through and cross that finish line.” Gonzalez is just one of many runners who said the weather made the race a little more fun. And it didn’t seem to bother the supporters who came out early to cheer on their loved ones. “We are here supporting our friend Melissa,” Sara Hudson said. “She is running her first half marathon, and I know how great it feels to have people out on the course supporting me, so I wanted her to get that experience.” Not only are the runners achieving a remarkable feat, but they are also supporting a cause. Organizers said the thousands of dollars raised will benefit child abuse prevention programs at the Carl Perkins Center.
