JACKSON, Tenn. — Charles Pittman, the 22-year-old former Union University student accused of killing his fiancee on campus, returned to court Monday. It was only for a brief hearing. We spoke with the public defender handling Pittman’s case. He said Monday the deadline for a plea deal was extended because necessary evidence has yet to be processed by the TBI due to a backlog at the lab. “The defense is also interested in seeing those reports before the trial so that we can prepare to see if we need to get our own experts or look into this further,” said public defender George Googe. The new plea deal cut off date is April 27. Googe says he will announce in May if the case is ready to move forward. Pittman is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of Olivia Greenlee.
