Skunk tests positive for rabies in Middle Tennessee

FRANKLIN, Tenn. (AP) – Officials are urging pet owners to make sure their animals are up-to-date on rabies vaccinations after a skunk in Middle Tennessee tested positive for the deadly disease.

WSMV-TV in Nashville (http://bit.ly/1Gf9qLx ) reports the skunk was found in Williamson County. Director Laura Chavarria of the Williamson County Animal Center says a Brentwood family’s two dogs attacked the skunk on their property last week.

The skunk was found to be positive for rabies. The station said the two dogs were both up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations and are doing well while undergoing a two-week quarantine.

Rabies vaccinations are required by state law.

The Animal Center is working with local clinics to offer $10 rabies shots on Saturdays in April. For more information, call the center at (615) 790-5590.
