MCKENZIE, Tenn. – McKenzie’s Chris Edlin is living proof you’re never too old to follow your dream. His neighbors hear echos from an Everlast punching bag at 6 a.m. every weekday. “I feel like I’m a winner because I’m still in the game in my 50’s, almost 53 years of age,” said Edlin. Edlin smiles when his doctors tell him he’s a young 52. “Something was gnawing at me. I thought I was through with boxing as far as competing,” said Edlin. “I got a friend in Nashville that’s also a boxer. He said Chris you gotta give it one more shot.” In 2010, he finished as runner up in the Ringside World Championships (lightweight division). He’s back for more five years later. “I think athletes are great at any age. Just keep your mind focused and you can do it,” said Joey Martin, who encouraged Edlin to give the World Championships another try. Edlin normally trains against kids less than three times his age at the Paris Henry County Boxing Club. But on one afternoon, Edlin gave a call to Martin, a 2010 World Champion (heavyweight). “He’s up at five or six in the morning. Hopefully, his opponents aren’t.,” said Martin. “It’s dedication. It’s a lonely sport.” Edlin agrees that the boxing life can be selfish and lonely. However, standing in his corner is unwavering support. “She doesn’t like the fact that I’m dropping weight. You’re looking bad, you’re losing weight. That’s just a mom for you,” laughed Edlin. Edlin’s says his strict diet and schedule are vital to bringing home the title to McKenzie. “My style is more technical. Smart but aggressive. That’s going to be the key for me. ” Edlin has been training for 10 months, and will travel to Kansas City, MO in July for the World Championships.
