TDOT works on I-40 pothole patch-ups

JACKSON, Tenn. — Temperatures have warmed, but one thing remains from our stretch of wintry weather — the pothole problem. After weeks of patching individual potholes, TDOT takes a new approach this week on Interstate 40. Traffic slowed to a halt Wednesday afternoon eastbound on I-40 between exits 82 and 83. Crews not only filled in but actually repaved a portion of the roadway and used a cold mixture meant to be more permanent. The highway potholes have been the cause of many frustrations with Jackson drivers. “I was really afraid. I couldn’t tell where these holes were, and I thought I was going to damage my car,” driver Mary Shivers said. She said a recent trip to Nashville had her swerving to avoid the small but dangerous potholes. TDOT officials said crews will work on patches in Madison County through Friday unless rain halts progress. The construction affected nearby businesses right off the interstate. Hunter Webb, who works at a local gas station, said they are seeing fewer walk-ins since the patchwork started earlier this week. “We have been a little slower the last few days with all the construction,” Webb said. “I guess it’s just been hard for people to get up in here.” Shivers said she is just glad this looks like a more permanent solution than just filling in the holes one by one. Officials said if weather allows, construction will go on every day from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until Friday. To see a full schedule of pothole repair projects, go to the Seen on 7 section of our website.
