JACKSON, Tenn. — Jackson police say video from cameras posted around the Hub City are helping curb crime. New surveillance video from a police camera off N. Fairgrounds Street shows what police say is a suspect fleeing after shooting multiple rounds into a car Monday morning. While no one was hurt, those who live nearby are glad the camera was there to help solve this violent crime. “The cameras are good, and they can take the pictures of the cars or whoever’s driving and everything,” west Jackson resident Veealice Coble said. Police say 18 cameras posted throughout Jackson are producing results, helping protect even without an officer present. “A police car can’t be everywhere at every minute, so this is just another tool that we’re able to use and utilize, and it has paid off in other crimes that we’ve had,” Interim Police Chief Julian Wiser told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News Tuesday. The police camera at Crestview Apartments in west Jackson has only been up for about a week, but residents said they already can see a difference. Those WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News spoke with in the area said they are glad the cameras are there. “With these cameras, a lot of the people that’s doing the stuff going to be caught,” Jerry Anderson said. “You can see them on the cameras doing it, so I think it’s a good thing. I think we need to have more of them.” “The technology they have now, it will help with the crime and drive-by shootings they have going on,” Lashonda Perry said. The cameras were funded through a state grant. Wiser said they have no named suspects in Monday’s shooting on Gordon Street. If you have any information that could help, call Crime Stoppers at 731-424-TIPS (8477).
