BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — The only police precinct in West Tennessee outside of Memphis, was opened Thursday morning, according to the mayor. The substation is located in a building formerly used by the City Housing Authority in north Brownsville. Police Chief Chris Lea said the Housing Authority gave the department the building, and officers moved equipment from the downtown headquarters to set up the new center. He said the location is productive toward safety because this area north of the city sees the most crime. He said having a police precinct close by would increase officer presence and increase safety. “The city is growing and expanding,” Lea said. “For us to be able to move into the community and serve their needs and ours, it’s a plus for everybody.” He said the new location will decrease the slight crowding at the department’s headquarters where the criminal investigation division, fire department and city hall all shared the same building. Residents said they welcome the change and hope it will lead to a better relationship between the community and law enforcement. “So that a lot of healing can take place and a lot of things can move forward,” resident Gwen Gavin said. Lea said officers have been in and out of the new precinct for about a week while getting used to the flow of operations. He said everything looks good so far.
