JACKSON, Tenn. — The man accused of pulling the trigger in a northeast Jackson shooting appeared Monday in Jackson City Court. Zacharious Cole faces multiple counts including attempted first-degree murder, carjacking, evading arrest and a weapon charge. “Heard somebody banging on the door real loud and thought somebody was trying to break in,” neighbor Ofentress Spann said. A shooting Sunday morning near the intersection of Oakridge Street and Ridgemont Drive sent a man to the hospital, according to police. Span said he found the victim lying on his doorstep. “He was saying ‘I’ve been shot’ is what it was,” Span said. Investigators said the victim, Christopher Carpenter, was shot three times. “When they rolled him over, I could see that he’d been shot in the face,” Spann said. “The officer said in the neck and then he pointed to his back — so much blood you really couldn’t tell just how bad it was, but it was bad.” Officers said when they stopped Cole on Campbell Street he took off on foot. Police said they found a revolver on the ground where they took him into custody. Investigators said Cole admitted to shooting Carpenter and taking his car. The crime concerns neighbors such as Byas Wofford. “You got some crazy folk in this area,” he said. Spann encouraged people to attend their neighborhood watch meetings and pray. “It concerns me, all the crime that’s going on, people losing their lives,” Spann said. Cole is being held at the Madison County jail in lieu of a $500,000 bond. We reached out to the Jackson Police Department for an update on the victim‘s condition but did not get a response. Cole is scheduled to return to court April 23.
