JACKSON, Tenn. — The halls at Medina Middle School were quiet Monday, because the Collier twins weren’t at school. The school sign that sits near the road says it all — “Prayers for the Collier Family.” “Shawn and Keyshawn had been in our school system since the 2nd grade, so they’ve been in this school for the last 5 years, and we have seen them grown up, two rambunctious young ones,” Medina Middle School Principal Steve Maloan said. The boys were out playing at a Gibson County pond Sunday when the sheriff said one fell in and the other went in to help. Neither of them made it out of the water alive. Each of them loved football and were excited for their next steps on to high school. “They were very excited about attending South Gibson County High School, and they were ready to leave 8th grade and venture into high school athletics and high school, period,” Maloan said. The two boys were loved by their community, which was shown by an outpouring of support Sunday night at the Medina City Park. Hundreds gathered around the area to show how much they loved the Collier brothers and how much the Collier family means to them. About 20 school counselors were on campus Monday to help students in the grieving process, something Maloan said is necessary. Most importantly, school administrators said they’ve left a legacy. “They had their own personality and their own makeup, and so they’re going to be remembered,” Maloan said. The support from their Medina family is something the Colliers said is helping them get through this difficult time.
