JACKSON, Tenn. — Each year, the second full week of April is dedicated to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators. They have the integral job of linking those in need with those who can help them. Dispatchers and telecommunicators are rarely seen, but their worth is immeasurable. Local dispatchers tell us they know their job is important and that is why the do what they do. “You have to have someone you can call to get the police where they need to be, the fire department where they need to be,” said Melanie Gullett, a Jackson dispatcher. The week honoring telecommunicators was originally introduced in Congress in 1991.
