JACKSON, Tenn. — On the eve of the start of early voting, four of the five candidates for Jackson mayor gathered for a second forum this week. Tim York did not attend. The forum was held at the University of Memphis Lambuth campus. Dozens of voters were in attendance, many from the midtown and LANA communities. The candidates talked primarily about the city’s high crime rate and ways they plan to curb violence. “You need to address jobs, and that will bring the crime rate down,” Nadine Richmond said. “You can’t just put people in jail. You have to deal with the unemployment among the people committing the crimes.” However, crime was not the only topic. They answered a wide array of submitted questions. The forum lasted almost two hours. “I’d like to see more development,” Mark Benton said. “With development comes revenue for the city.” The candidates have a third forum this week. It is scheduled for Thursday. WBBJ and Jackson State Community College are teaming up to host the only debate for the mayoral candidates. You can watch Jackson Decides — Your Questions, Your Candidates, live on WBBJ at 6 p.m. April 23. Questions for the candidates may be emailed to jacksondecides@wbbjtv.com.
