HORNSBY, Tenn. — Hornsby Thrift Store was once the heartbeat of the town but has since been destroyed by the economy. But that heartbeat may live once again after the town’s mayor says the old building soon will be opening its doors to a new business. “We really have nothing in this city, so that would be a huge project and success if we can somehow pull it off,” Mayor Mack Carter Jr. said. Carter is talking about plans for a dollar store that will be one of two businesses in the town. This may not seem like a big deal, but for a town with a population of just more than 300, this could bring more than just a place to shop. “Just the dollar store itself could create revenue and generate more business in the area,” Carter said Carter says the new business hopefully will bring more people into the city, generating thousands of dollars in revenue. Carter says the dollar store chain is on board with the project — what he needs now is investors. Longtime resident George Brint says Hornsby was once a town that thrived, but he does not believe the dollar store will be able to survive. “It’s not a real economic center here in Hardeman County, and of course it’s still going to be Bolivar that’s going to be No. 1 until something happens,” Brint said. Carter says the store could possibly only take up half of the square footage in the building. He says the other half could be used for a supermarket.
