MADISON COUNTY, Tenn.,– Beyond Bars Animal Rescue and dozens of community members gathered to make signs for wounded war veteran John Hayes.

The animal rescue group will travel to St. Augustine, Florida next week to deliver a service dog to Hayes. In 2010, Hayes was critically wounded by an IED when fighting overseas, leaving him a double amputee from the waist down.

With signs saying phrases like “We can never thank you enough,” and “You’re our hero,” some said the simple words carry a much more powerful message.

“I think he feels like he’s left with nothing,” Kerry Graue said. “We just wanted him to know we care about him. He gave up his life for our country.”

The special puppy delivery is a surprise for Hayes. To help contribute to the mission and find out more about the German Shepherd service dog, Sheera the non profit has a Go Fund Me page established to help raise money to cover costs anticipated throughout the dogs life.
