BROWNSVILLE, Tenn. — An early morning fight turns deadly Friday in Brownsville. Police say one man is dead and another in custody. A sense of shock lays over this Brownsville neighborhood after police say a man was killed at Bluebird Manor Apartments when he was stabbed in the neck.
“It’s a senseless death,” Latoi Turner said. “He was a young man at 26 years old that did not deserve to die.” Police say Mark Ligon is the man accused of stabbing Johnny Reed around 2 a.m. Friday. Family of Reed say he died hours later at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. A cousin of the man now charged with first-degree murder says the fight started because of a disagreement over money and drugs. “This time around my cousin comes to visit, and next thing we know Johnny’s dead, you know, he killed him,” Tamiko Jackson said. Reed has three children that he leaves behind. His family says Reed was stabbed just a few feet away from the door of Reed’s mother. “We don’t know why life came so short for him, but life goes on,” Deborah Hunt said. Neighbors say they are torn by all the violence not only in Brownsville but in Haywood County and are asking for it to stop. Police say Ligon currently is being held at Haywood County Jail.
