DOWNTOWN JACKSON — Mayoral candidate James Baxter held a news conference Wednesday in city hall to respond to the racial tone of advertising by opponents Jerry Gist and Lowe Finney. In particular, the focus was on a mailer sent out by Gist featuring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on one side and an allegation on the other side that Finney, while a state senator, voted to take money away from the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis. “And I think that he is exploiting and using Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in order to win over more African Americans to support him,” Baxter said. Baxter says both men are using King’s name to gain votes.
