JACKSON, Tenn. — Thousands of students got to skip school on Monday to go to a baseball game. The Jackson Generals hosted their annual School Day at the Ballpark at Jackson. About 3,000 students got to cut class to watch the Jackson Generals take on the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. “Feels better than working,” Eli Duke, a third grader, said. “It is a good day to wind down,” nurse Candice Haley said. Haley came with a group of students from Northeast Middle School. “It’s the end of the school year, and we just decided just to let the kids get out of the classroom, just have a little fun today,” she said. Kids from Kindergarten to high school, from West Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi and Missouri came for a much needed break from the books after standardized testing. “I’m just glad we’re done testing, but we still have some tests, but know I can pass it,” Jeralding Olivas, a fourth grader, said. General Manager Jason Compton said the Generals organization donated the tickets. “This is one opportunity that some kids don’t have another opportunity to come out,” he said. Kids can enjoy ballpark favorites such as hot dogs and cheese steaks. “It’s just a fun day for the family and the kids,” Haley said. The team said they hope people enjoy the park and come back. The Jackson Generals will host another school day on Wednesday, May 13. The team said it expects an even bigger turnout.
