Gist wins re-election for Jackson mayor

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — The unofficial final results of the election for Jackson mayor are in, and incumbent Jerry Gist has been re-elected to lead the city for four more years in his third term as mayor. Gist earned 51 percent of the vote, with Lowe Finney carrying 41 percent, James Baxter 6 percent, Tim York 1 percent and Charlie Motton .25 percent. To be declared winner, a candidate in the race for Jackson mayor must earn at least 50 percent plus one vote, according to city rules. All candidates for Jackson mayor run as independent. Gist was first elected city mayor in May 2007. He previously has served as Madison County mayor, elected to that position in 2002. Gist began working for the City of Jackson as executive director of the city’s recreation and parks department. He assumed the role of executive director of the city’s public works department in 1991. Gist holds a bachelor’s degree from Jacksonville State University in Alabama, a master‘s degree in public administration from Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., and is a graduate of the Harvard School of Government. He also is a U.S. Army veteran. Gist and his wife, Liz, have two children and four grandchildren.
