MILAN, Tenn. — Milan boys basketball coach Dexter Williams is returning home to Atwood. Williams told his team he accepted West Carroll’s Junior/Senior High School principal and athletic director position early Thursday. “That was my hundred percent intent to rebirth Milan’s basketball program,” said Williams, who spent two years on the Bulldogs sidelines. “This is a dream opportunity to be the principal of the school I graduated from,” he said. “Everything seemed to fit right now for not only me but my family.” This is Williams’ second stint as a principal. The Union grad was Tigrett Middle School’s principal for three years before coming to Milan. Williams say he’s had conversations with people from Milan and West Carroll about the big decision. “Leaving Liberty and going to Tigrett Middle as a principal, then from Tigrett to Milan on the administrative and athletics side — I’m looking forward to being in an instructional leader position,” Williams said. “Probably two or three months ago, I didn’t imagine something like this would happen. My advice to everyone is never say what you won’t do and always keep your options open.” While Williams is turning in his whistle for a principal’s hat, his wife, Amber, is filling his void on the hardwood. “My wife will be coaching a fifth grade basketball team in the fall at Medina Middle School,” he said. “Having us both coaching basketball would be impossible for our family. WE have three very active kids, and it would pose it self being a challenge.” It seems impossible now, but Williams says his itch for basketball will always be there. “I hate stepping away from coaching. Being an AD allows me to have a hand in all the athletics. I might get the feeling to coach again,” Williams said, laughing. Williams added that during his second-run as principal, he wants to get to know each player better. “I know I’ll have that opportunity with a smaller population of kids. The good thing about it know is a lot of the kids that go to school there now — I’d be willing to bet I know their parents. If I don’t know those parents, I know someone that knows the parent.” Williams’ first day as West Carroll’s principal and athletic director is June 8.
