CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. — A longtime sponsor of West Carroll’s football program says he will withdraw his support after hearing the school will not let a girl join the team. Steve Murphy, owner of Medina Funeral Home, said they have always sponsored the football program. After seeing the story of 13-year-old Thalia Townsend on WBBJ, he decided on the spot to no longer sponsor the program, he said. Townsend is a left tackle and defensive lineman, but according to Superintendent Eric Williams, the coach will not allow her to play. The school system said it is legal under Title Nine, which is a law created to give women equal rights.
