HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — Basketball State Champions were gifted framed jerseys by the CEO of JC Penney Monday night at Haywood High School. Head basketball coach Kendall Dancy said framing the jerseys and replacing them cost about $5,000. CEO Marvin Ellison contacted Dancy a week after the Tomcats won the championship in Murfreesboro. “He asked me to come up with something memorable for the guys for the rest of their lives,” Dancy said. The answer came in the uniforms the team wore throughout their practically perfect season. Tomcats players Jordon Varnado and Jalen Benton said they were grateful for the gifts. “I’d just tell him thank you for everything you’ve done for us,” Varnado said. They also said seeing someone so accomplished still care about what happens in his hometown encourages them to always remember their roots. “I’ll do like he did, come support the Tomcats and everything they do,” Benton said. The coach said there are about 20 players on the team.
