Storm survey teams confirm tornadoes in Haywood, Decatur Counties

MEMPHIS, Tenn.-WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News has conformation from the National Weather Service that two tornadoes touched down in West Tennessee, Wednesday. Meteorologists now say the system produced an EF 0 tornado, with winds up to 75 miles per hour in Haywood County near Brownsville. No damage was reported in the area. Damage was also felt by Wednesday’s tornado in Decatur county. Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Memphis classify the damage as minor. Some homes were affected and trees were knocked down. Some residents told WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News they were caught off guard because there was not a tornado warning issued in Decatur or Haywood counties. The National Weather Service said there is a reason warnings were not issued. “They are very small, very localized and really concentrated down to the lowest portions of the storm. All of these factors working together made them difficult to see on radar,” said Gary Woodall, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Memphis. The strength of the tornado in Decatur County has not yet been determined.
