LEXINGTON, Tenn. — The Lexington Police Department said it may be keeping even more dangerous drivers off the roadways during the busy holiday weekend thanks to its new e-ticketing system. “I’ve given three seat belt tickets so far today,” Patrolman Josh Box said halfway through his Friday shift. LPD has started using a new technology-driven, paper-free system to issue citations — something some officers said will save taxpayers big money. “You’re taking the human being out of the equation so that you don’t have to waste time handling that piece of paper,” Capt. Jeff Middleton said. Middleton said the e-tickets also save officers time in the field. Officer Box agrees. “Once you get it down, completely down, it’s so much faster,” Box said. “Writing a ticket down, it used to take me probably eight minutes a traffic stop.” He said now he usually can issue the ticket in about five minutes. Box said he is a fan of the digital system. “It’s so quick and it keeps me from making mistakes,” he said. Now when officers approach a vehicle and take the driver’s license, the bar code on the back is scanned. Almost all the driver’s info is instantly uploaded. Tickets are printed inside patrol cars before handed back to the driver. LPD has eight of the Motorola devices for patrolmen to use. Middleton said traffic violators are the ones helping to fund the project by paying another $5 in addition to total court costs.
