Haywood Co. residents may see tax increase

HAYWOOD COUNTY, Tenn. — Some West Tennesseans may be looking at more taxes after a budget meeting shows a large gap between what they’ve spent and what they’ve earned. Officials with Haywood County’s budget committee say right now they’re looking at a $1.3 million deficit. It’s just the beginning stages of the budget, but they’re looking at cutting spending or increasing taxes by 8 cents. But there will have to be a vote before that. “The county commission will get together and the whole 20 members will vote on the budget,” Haywood County Budget Director Larry Livingston said. “The general public does not vote.” The suggested proposal would increase taxes by 3.34 percent. Officials say the final budget is expected to be approved in July.
