JACKSON, Tenn. — Swiss authorities are looking into whether FIFA officials accepted bribes in exchange for awarding the 2018 World Cup to Russia and the 2022 World Cup to Qatar. It is more controversy surrounding the organization after the justice department handed down indictments to nine FIFA officials on charges include racketeering, money laundering and fraud. Friday, WBBJ 7 Eyewitness News talked to the Jackson Futbol Club, which is a part of the U.S. Soccer Federation. Organizers with the club said although they oppose the decision of re-electing the president, that decision will not stop their progress. “It’s tough to see how the changes that need to take place are going to take place under his leadership,” said Clay Hanna with the Jackson Futbol Club. “There’s a need for transparency, and I just don’t see how that’s going to happen with him still in charge.” U.S. Soccer released a statement after the vote, saying it is disappointed in the results of the election and will continue to push for meaningful change within FIFA.
