First liquor store in Jefferson City opens after referendum

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) – The first liquor store in Jefferson City has opened its doors.

WBIR-TV (http://on.wbir.com/1GgpZrS ) reports Volunteer Spirts opened Wednesday. In November 2014, Jefferson City voters passed a referendum to allow the sale of wine and liquor in the city.

Before the opening of the liquor store, Jefferson County residents had to drive 15-20 miles to get a bottle of liquor or wine.

The business will face competition soon from other area liquor stores and grocery stores. Jefferson City is expecting two more liquor stores to open within the next week.

The referendum allowing liquor stores to be built did not come without opposition in the November election.

Sixty-two percent of voters passed the referendum, while 38 percent voted to keep liquor stores out of Jefferson City.
