CARROLL COUNTY, Tenn. — Being a vendor on Highway 70 takes a bit of a strategy. “You can’t skin somebody totally because if you do they may never come back over, so everybody has to feel like they got a good deal,” Jimmy Bailey said. Bailey has sold items on this lawn for years, from tinker toys to antique trucks. When the signs come out each year, some who live along the 100 mile stretch of sales are prepared to take extra caution. “It gets a little hectic this time of year, so I’ve got my second car just like the other one I totalled, so I get kind of nervous driving home from work,” Travis Sutton said, who lives near the highway. Bailey said they have turned the front yard into a parking lot. “You can pull off the road. It’s a safety factor and matter of fact, he’s got me standing on guard duty. I am watching this side of the road to keep people from blocking it,” Bailey said. Sutton participates in the treasure hunt each year, but has learned his lesson. “Slow down and don’t do like me and try to look at the dresser on the side of the road as you’re driving by. Just stop and turn around if you have to,” Sutton advised. Because a great deal shouldn’t be interrupted by a fender bender.
