JACKSON, Tenn. — The Jackson area chapter of the NAACP reacts to the resignation of embattled Spokane, Wash., leader Rachel Dolezal. Her estranged parents accuse her of falsely portraying herself as black. In a letter posted Monday on the NAACP Facebook page, Dolezal announced she’s stepping down as president. She wrote that leaving her post is “in the best interest of” the chapter. In Jackson, NAACP leaders say for them Dolezal’s race is not a factor. “Well, I think Ms. Dolezal who has her own issues and they’re personal and we’re going to leave it at that, but I think the service of the branch that she was able to lead in the northwest has been just an example of good leadership,” said Harrell Carter, president of the Jackson-Madison County Chapter of the NAACP. There is no word yet on who will replace Dolezal.
