JACKSON, Tenn. — A neighborhood reacts to a shooting that comes so close to a local community center. “Everywhere we are turning now, there seems to be a great deal of violence,” James Theus said. A place for children to get away and enjoy the summer now comes close to a crime scene taped off by police after bullets went flying Monday night. “To see young people now taking the gun and turning it on themselves repeatedly without consequences — their future or lives of others — is really disheartening,” Theus said. Police say the shooting happened in the parking lots behind T.R. White Sportsplex and directly across the street. Terry Smith, the director of the Sportsplex, says no one involved was associated with their community center. “Those are just random accidents, and that’s what is just going to happen in the neighborhood or any neighborhood that’s having something,” Smith said. Parents who take their kids to the camp at the complex say it’s not a troubled area and are thankful this didn’t happen during a different part of the day. “It’s a very good program so far,” Renisha Key said. “I know I never heard of anything happening up at T.R. White with the kids. I thank God the shooting did happen here during the daytime.”
