One arrested in east Jackson shooting

JACKSON, Tenn. — A man was in city court Tuesday after being arrested in a Monday night shooting in east Jackson. Robert Tipler faces numerous charges after police say he fired a 9 mm handgun toward the parking lot of T.R. White Sportsplex, according to an affidavit. Police say Tipler fired the shots around 8 p.m. while leaving the Sportsplex, located at 304 N. Hays Avenue. Numerous juveniles and adults were present at the time of the shooting, according to police. A witness saw Tipler run from the scene and directed police to his location, the affidavit states. Tipler was arrested on East College Street, and officers found a 9 mm handgun hidden nearby under a trash bag, the document states. Police say Tipler admitted to the shooting and discarding the gun. Several vehicles in the Sportsplex parking lot were hit by bullets, court papers state. Tipler is not registered to carry a gun and was unlawfully in possession at the time of the shooting, according to the affidavit. Jackson police said this kind of violence will not be tolerated. “We are going to add special patrols to the area and increase our presence in that area and anywhere where our community youth are trying to do something positive with themselves,” said Lt. Matthew Hardaway with the Jackson Police Department. Tipler is charged with reckless endangerment with a firearm, unlawful possession of a weapon and tampering with evidence. He is being held in lieu of a $150,000 bond.
