Cleveland Police Dept. review calls for immediate action
CLEVELAND, Tenn. (AP) – A three-month independent review of the Cleveland Police Department has called for immediate action to bring down the city’s crime rate and to ensure the department does not repeat its past mistakes.
Multiple media outlets report the 83-page report was released on Wednesday, offering the City Council 10 recommendations and attaching a price tag of $1.6 million atop of the department’s $9 million budget for fiscal 2015.
In March, the city hired former Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Director Larry Wallace to conduct an independent review of the department.
Wallace’s recommendations include hiring a new chief through a more transparent process.
The department has been plagued with scandal in recent years, most recently the forced retirement of its chief and the demotion and transfer of two other officers.
