JACKSON, Tenn. — The Justice Department is opening a hate crime investigation into the mass shooting that took place Wednesday at a Charleston, S.C., church. But our local NAACP is calling it an act of terrorism. Leaders gathered Thursday to talk about how this violence has shattered the safety of our churches. “Our faith-based community has to come alive now,” said Harrell Carter, president of the Jackson-Madison County Chapter of the NAACP. “They are no longer safe in their sanctuary. We all understand that is not the nation that we want it to be.” Carter says he expects some churches will resort to having armed guards in and around their buildings.
