Nashville DA builds staff with defense attorneys

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – More than one-third of the new prosecutors hired by Nashville District Attorney Glenn Funk served most recently as defense attorneys.

According to The Tennessean’s recent analysis (http://tnne.ws/1HaRu7Z) of human resources records and resumes, eight of Funk’s 23 new assistant district attorneys came from a public defender’s office or a private criminal defense practice.

Funk has faced continuing turnover since taking office in September, as at least 19 assistant district attorneys have left in that time period with about 220 years of experience as prosecutors.

The new hires have more than 300 years of experience among them. Half of those years were defending the accused, according to the analysis.

Funk’s office spokeswoman Dorinda Carter says the hires make the current office the most diverse in its history with 10 minority attorneys.
