Madison Co. marriage software updated to include same-sex couples

UPDATED: MADISON COUNTY, Tenn. — The software the county uses to provide marriage licenses has been updated to accommodate same-sex couples. According to Madison County Clerk Fred Birmingham, the update consists of a change of information fields to include “Applicant 1” and “Applicant 2” instead of “Bride” and “Groom.” Birmingham had said earlier Friday the update may not take place until Monday. The Tennessee attorney general is set to hold a news conference at 2 p.m. to address the changes resulting from Friday’s historic Supreme Court ruling that same-sex couples have a right to marry anywhere in the United States.
