Hooked On Science: Elephant Toothpaste

Mixing together a few ingredients from around the house can create a rush of bubbles. So much so, it looks like the toothpaste an elephant might use. Jason Lindsey aka “Mr. Science” with Hooked on Science shows us how to create Elephant’s Toothpaste. INGREDIENTS one space· 16 Ounce Plastic Soda Bottle one space· 20-Volume Hydrogen Peroxide one space· Dry Yeast one space· Warm Water one space· Dishwashing Liquid INSTRUCTIONS STEP 1: Pour half a cup of 20-volume hydrogen peroxide into the 16 ounce plastic soda bottle. STEP 2: Add one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. STEP 3: Mix three tablespoons of warm water with 1 tablespoon of dry yeast. STEP 4: Pour the warm water and dry yeast into the 16 ounce plastic soda bottle and observe. EXPLANATION The yeast acts as a catalyst, quickly removing the oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide, creating a lot of bubbles. The bottle warms up due to an exothermic reaction, which is a reaction that releases heat. Go to www.hookedonscience.org for more experiments that might get you and your family “Hooked on Science.”
