JACKSON, Tenn. — If you want to add some excitement to your garden, look no further than the skies. If you are a gardener, birds may be your best protector from unwanted pests. “If you got a lot of bugs that are maybe being harmful to your plants, then the birds are going to be delighted to help you control those pests,” said Carol Reese, an ornamental horticulture specialist for the West Tennessee region. She said flowering or fruiting plants naturally draw in birds and that having plants of differing heights can help vary the types of birds you attract. “Different levels, because birds will actually nest at different heights — they don’t all nest in trees,” Reese said. “Some like to nest in shrubs or even under the shrubs on the ground.” Reese said do your research if you want a certain type of bird to call your backyard home. “If you don’t have exactly the right size hole, for example, blue birds will not be attracted to your nest.” Tina Wooley of R & J Feed Supply said the type of bird seed you put out can make a difference. “A lot of people like to feed the wild bird with no corn because it does not attract the black birds,” she said. “The corn attracts the black birds, and the black birds will run all the good little birds out of your yard.” Birds bring benefits to the garden and are becoming the fastest-growing recreational activity in the world. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, one in every three people bird-watch. “People love learning about birds and hearing their songs,” Reese said. “It’s a great way to get kids or even people who can’t get outside a lot can take a lot of pleasure from bird watching from the window.” More detailed information about specific birdhouses will be featured Thursday during the Summer Celebration Lawn and Garden Show at the UT Extension office.
