Man charged with assaulting Jackson officer

DOWNTOWN JACKSON — A man went before a judge Monday on accusations of assaulting a Jackson police officer. An officer was in a patrol car at the intersection of East Chester Street and Hays Avenue when he says a man later identified as Nathaniel Merriweather approached him and said someone was trying to kill him, according to an affidavit. The officer told Merriweather he was with the police department and would help him and asked him to move to the sidewalk. Merriweather then reached into the patrol car and grabbed the officer’s radio cord and would not let go, according to the affidavit. The officer got out of the car and was able to get the cord away from Merriweather, but he continued to fight with the officer until he was able to get Merriweather into the back seat of the car, the document states. Merriweather is charged with simple assault on a law enforcement officer. His bond is set at $10,000.
