LaFollette looks to ban smoking in city parks
LAFOLLETTE, Tenn. (AP) – The city of LaFollette is looking to ban smoking in public parks.
WBIR-TV (http://on.wbir.com/1LZkfaI ) reports that the LaFollette City Council has approved on first reading an ordinance that would keep people from smoking in its six parks.
Mayor Michael Stanfield says he is backing the ban in order to save lives in Campbell County. He says he was diagnosed with tongue cancer 22 years ago and has since quit smoking.
Stanfield says the ordinance would keep the smoke away from children and also spare newly purchased playground equipment and turf from discarded cigarette butts.
The final reading of the ordinance will be at next month’s City Council meeting. Stanfield says he expects it to pass with the support of many LaFollette citizens.
