Solar farm coming to Lowndes County

COLUMBUS, Miss. (AP) – A Tennessee company is building two solar panel facilities in Lowndes County.

Public Service Commissioner Brandon Presley, company officials and local leaders made the announcement Thursday in Columbus.

Presley says in a news release that Silicon Ranch of Nashville is putting in a solar farm that will produce 1.6 megawatts of electricity – enough to power 200 homes.

The program is also part of an initiative by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Silicon Ranch Investments and SR Walker East will install 5,000 single access tracking panels that follow the arch of the sun. Construction starts in a couple of weeks.

Company officials hope to have the project online by the end of 2015.

Several solar farms have been approved this year throughout the state including Okolona, Brookhaven, Jackson, and Senatobia.
